This book shares the personal narratives of current and former DACA recipients, exemplifies how protected status has transformed their lives for the better, and underscores the potential repercussions of its absence.Since its inception in 2012, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) has provided a lifeline to over 830,000 qualified individuals brought to the United States as children—granting them legal work permits and protected status that temporarily relieves them from deportation. Subject to a conditional period of two years with the opportunity of renewal, DACA status has provided its recipients a means to pursue their education and establish their careers.
