Developed in the 1930s for the USAAC (United States Army Air Corps), the Boeing B-17 was a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft. Nicknamed the “Flying Fortress,” it was utilized in World War II to strategically bomb German military and industrial targets. Nicknamed “A Bit o’ Lace” after the “Miss Lace” character in Milt Caniff’s famous military comic strip, MALE CALL, it flew 83 missions armed with up to 13 machine guns and a 9,600-pound bomb load. It weighed 65,000 pounds, took four 1,200-horsepower engines to pull, could cruise up to 150 mph with a top speed of 287 mph, and reached a maximum altitude of 35,600 feet.
