CHINA TRADE: Historical Paintings

Chinese oil paintings from the Qing Dynasty can be categorized into two major branches: court oil paintings and late Qing Guangdong oil paintings. The former were created by Western painters and missionaries strictly regulated by the imperial court, while the latter emerged in Guangdong from the late 18th century to the late 19th century. In terms of scale, Guangdong oil paintings far exceeded court paintings, covering a broader range of subjects and more realistically reflecting the history of China and Guangdong. Additionally, the artistic level of the finest Guangdong painters surpassed that of court painters.Guangdong oil paintings were widely exported to Europe and America, where they became known as "Chinese trade paintings." Throughout their development—spanning their inception, formation, commercialization, and eventual decline—these paintings played a crucial role in China’s artistic and historical heritage.
